Technology In The Field – NavVis VLX3

DP Electric’s BIM and VDC team just added a new tool to their belt.

Our Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Virtual Design & Construction (VDC) team is excited to enhance their capabilities with their brand new NavVis VLX3. With the addition of this new tool, the team can make more accurate and precise scans in a much shorter time frame. The NavVis VLX3 is a walk-around scanner with two, 32-layer LiDAR sensors, four panoramic cameras, and uses SLAM processing (the same technology used in driverless vehicles).

Not only will this advanced scanner enhance the abilities within the BIM/VDC team, but all areas of the construction process. Our field team can quickly compare installed work to our BIM models, enabling early detection of discrepancies. The VLX3 also allows the team to work in reverse, using detailed scans of existing conditions to confidently plan and install new equipment without relying on outdated or inaccurate models. Additionally, the device captures control points while scanning, which can later be aligned with our BIM models for a high-quality digital representation.

Communicating and collaborating with clients also just got better. We can share access to the point cloud, allowing clients to access the scans with their own password to keep information confidential.

“What excites me the most about the NavVis VLX3 Scanner is how it will help our VDC department with productivity, speed and accuracy. ” – Edguardo Valenzuela, VDC Manager

As technology continues to advance, so do we!
